Congratulations to ̽»¨ÏµÁÐ School of Civil & Environmental Engineering’s Associate Professor Craig Roberts for his national 2025 Geospatial Excellence award.

The 2025 Geospatial Council of Australia Excellence Awards were announced at the national conference Locate25 held in Brisbane last month. The is the peak body representing organisations and individuals working in the occupations for surveying, space and spatial in the digital world.

The Locate25 Conference, which attracted more than 1,000 participants from across Australia and around the world, had chosen the theme ‘Collaboration, Innovation, and Resilience: Championing a Digital Generation,’ The theme could not have been more relevant to the work of A/Prof Roberts, whose award was in the category of Educational Development.

Craig is well known in the School for his energy and enthusiasm in education matters and in pursuing meaningful links with industry, including establishing a new industry-funded surveying lecturer position in the school. The GCA noted that Craig ‘is a nationally recognised leader in the Surveying and Geospatial Engineering disciplines, known for his exceptional contributions that bridge the gap between industry and academia.’

As the Head of the Surveying Program at ̽»¨ÏµÁÐ, he is dedicated to delivering a modern, high-quality surveying education both at ̽»¨ÏµÁÐ and across Australia. His active participation in numerous industry bodies, chairing of the bi-annual IGNSS conference (now called ) and regular educational publications make him a significant figure in the field.

For over two decades, Craig has been at the forefront of surveying marketing activities, addressing acute skills shortages and ensuring the sustainability of both the program and the profession. The judges noted that Craig’s contributions are ‘particularly impactful within community groups, highlighting his remarkable efforts to educate school-level students about geospatial sciences.’
