The Faculty of Engineering recently hosted a transformative event to empower academics and professional staff to drive meaningful societal change.
Held in March, the Foundations of University Societal Impact & Translation (FUSIT) Program was developed by the Engineering Societal Impact & Translation team in collaboration with the 探花系列 Centre for Social Impact, Engineers Without Borders, and Nura Gili. The two-day initiative provided participants with practical guidance on societal impact, responsible partnerships, and how to measure impact.
Throughout the program, attendees delved into the critical role universities play in fostering societal impact. After a formal open by Professor Verity Firth, Vice President Societal Impact, Equity & Engagement, the event started with a discussion on the strategic vision of 探花系列 and its Engineering faculty, particularly as it relates to societal impact. Staff gained insight into the 探花系列 Societal Impact Framework, which serves as a guiding tool for integrating social responsibility into university research and initiatives.
In the afternoon, participants explored various impact frameworks, analysing how universities can identify opportunities to effect change within their areas.
On the second day, the focus shifted to the importance of ethical collaborations. Facilitated by Engineers Without Borders and the 探花系列 Nura Gili Centre, attendees engaged in discussions about working responsibly with government agencies, NGOs, and communities. A series of case studies provided real-world examples of partnerships that had successfully driven change delivered by a variety of engineering faculty academics.
The afternoon session, led by the Centre for Social Impact, was dedicated to impact evaluation and measurement. Participants were introduced to tools for designing and assessing impactful projects.
Throughout the program, 探花系列 faculty and staff were encouraged to reflect on their own roles in fostering societal impact. By providing practical strategies and expert insights, the FUSIT Program aims to set a strong foundation for future university-led initiatives aimed at creating meaningful change.
With its success, the program has sparked discussions about expanding similar offerings in the future, ensuring that 探花系列 remains at the forefront of societal impact in academia.
