I don鈥檛 know about you, but my听favourite thing to do during the holidays is听to听go to the beach, a park or just stay in bed听and听start picking my way through the听huge pile of books听I听collect听throughout听the year.听Whether you鈥檙e an avid reader听like me, an occasional book dabbler听or听just听looking for some听end-of-year听gifts听for friends, check out听this听list of top STEM-related books for this summer.

Year 7 to听9

This inspirational true story narrates the journey of William Kamkwamba, a teenager from Malawi who built a windmill out of scrap materials to power his village. It鈥檚 a testament to the power of curiosity and the importance of electricity. It鈥檚 even got a Netflix adaptation coming out soon (great for anyone who isn鈥檛 into reading)!听

These fictitious stories follow the lives of young female coders. From hackathon mishaps to eventful coding challenges, the books are a great introduction into what coding is really like (with a fair amount of drama thrown in for fun)!听

Year 10 to 12

This book is a wonderful introduction to Indigenous knowledge systems. The information is humorously presented and encourages readers to ponder some deep but essential questions about the world and Western science. This is my favourite book of the year鈥μ鼶efinitely worth听the read!听

This ambitious book uses data to quantify the unconscious gender biases plaguing STEM fields, politics and life in general. It鈥檚 a testament to the power of big data听and听how it can be used to highlight injustices and even the听gender听playing field. You鈥檒l finish this book feeling simultaneously outraged and inspired!听

If you鈥檙e anything like me, the names Mary Anning, Patricia Bath and Katherine Johnson mean little despite the amazing contributions听these听amazing听women听have made to the world.听So听this summer,听combat history鈥檚 neglect of female scientists听(while learning about a bunch of interesting STEM fields)听with this beautifully illustrated book.听听
